Deception Pass Bridge | Whidbey Island, WA

Deception Pass is a strait separating Whidbey Island from Fidalgo Island in Washington state.  The most well-known icon of Deception Pass is the towering pair of bridges allowing you to cross Deception Pass.

Deception Pass is a Washington State Park.  Here’s a few things to know:

  • Discover Pass is required (this pass grants access to all state parks); purchase online here.
  • Open year round for camping and day-use
  • Boat launch available
  • Many hiking trails
  • U.S. Navy jets from the nearby Naval Air Station Whidbey Island may fly over the campgrounds at any time for several hours conducting training missions. Times can vary between day and night.
  • For reservations and more details above the park, visit the State Park website here:

Walking out to the middle of the bridge is so cool. It is a LONG WAY down! The road is also busy, but there is a very clear sidewalk to travel on. Just be cautious when walking out with littles.  Be sure to look down in to the water. We say many seals (or sea lions?) swimming about. My daughter was sure it was just a fish because of how small it looked.

For our quick stop, we drove across the bridge and parked on the Whidbey Island side (the star/parking icon in the picture below).  After we ventured on to the bridge, we came back and did the quick trail down to Gun Point. This is a very easy trail, but it does go downhill/uphill. View the gallery below for more pictures of the trail.

The trail was beautiful! It is very shaded so be sure to bring a light jacket as needed.  There are bathrooms at the bottom of the trail.

We could have spent the entire afternoon looking for treasures on the beach.  We saw so much wildlife and found cool rocks, seashells and more. Bring a blanket and have a picnic! There’s plenty of logs for sitting on, or bearably rocky beach to sit on.

There’s so much to do in Deception State Park. I am hoping to do another post when we go camping there as a family.  If you don’t have time to camp or boat, you definitely need to stop and enjoy the beautiful bridge and surroundings for an afternoon.

Side Note: Being on the beach triggered my cell service as showing me in Canada. LOL! Be sure to check your international/Canada calling rights for cell service.  😀
